Quails and cormorants fall from the sky in Ukraine

Dead and still alive birds started literally falling from the sky near Mariupol in Donetsk Region (Ukraine). As the ICTV TV-channel reports, local experts sent blood tests of the dead birds to Donetsk, where supposition that it could be bird flu will be proved or denied.

The fact of plague among migrant birds moving to warmer countries was confirmed by Chief Sanitary Inspector of Mariupol Georgy Gusakov. ¿Last week dead bodies of cormorants were found at a beach in the left-bank part of the town. The second case was registered by local emergency service officers who found dead partridges in Mariupol. Their blood tests were immediately sent to laboratory, where veterinaries will decide whether the birds¿ deaths were caused by bird flu or by some other reasons. The final decision will be made by the veterinaries in Kiev. Three supporting laboratories have been created in Ukraine ¿ in Kiev, Lvov and Odessa ¿ that can determine the nature of the bird flu viruses, whether they pose danger to humans or not.¿

As a REGNUM correspondent reports, according to Gusakov, registration of first relapses of bird flu in Ukraine is just a question of time. For the last week only sanitary inspectors found more than 20 trade outlets in the town with half a million population that were selling poultry of unknown origin and without veterinary control permissions.
